4500E vs 6500E

Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade our Core switches from the classic 6500s to an E-chassis switch.  It seems that the 4500-Es are beefier than the 6500-Es but from experience and a production standpoint, which would be better suited for a core environment?  We can't move to the Nexus platform; at least not yet.  We would need Gig ports and uplink ports that would support both 1/10Gbps uplinks.

Thanks!

No, the 4500-E isn't really "beefier" than a 6500-E, but to maximize the 6500's performance you need to carefully select components.

Either can be a good core device.  The 4500 series should be less expensive.  If you use a 6500-E, and you've been using 6500s, you can reuse other components, but again, you need to be careful what you use if you want maximum performance.

For a core device, instead of a 6500, you should consider a 6807 or 6880.

For a core device, you might also want to consider the 4500-X.

yes 4500-X can be a better and optimal choice as you are moving from old 6500s .
