6509-E IOS update

All,

We just purchased a 6509-E and we're wanting to update the IOS on it before doing anything major with it. From the version command, it doesn't seem like it aligns with what the image requirements are for the latest version:

cisco WS-C6509-E (R7000) processor (revision 1.2) with 983008K/65536K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID SMG0947N2PA
SR71000 CPU at 600Mhz, Implementation 0x504, Rev 1.2, 512KB L2 Cache
Last reset from s/w reset
SuperLAT software (copyright 1990 by Meridian Technology Corp).
X.25 software, Version 3.0.0.
Bridging software.
TN3270 Emulation software.
1 Virtual Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface
244 Gigabit Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interfaces
1917K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of packet buffer memory.

65536K bytes of Flash internal SIMM (Sector size 512K).
Configuration register is 0x2102

512106496 bytes total (397606912 bytes free)

Okay, the existing image (12.2(18)SXF17) requires 512MB DRAM and 128MB Flash....I only see 64Mb....is this shared between the 2 Sups or is there something that I'm missing? The version that I want to go to requires 512/512 Flash, but it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to go to that version unless the last bolded memory stat is the 512MB that it's referring to....

Thanks!

John

Hi,

Core-6509#dir

    2  -rw-    33554432  Jan 24 2011 17:16:36 +00:00  sea_log.dat

512106496 bytes total (397606912 bytes free)

the above shows the memory of the active supervisor ir a little more than 512 mb,in which presently around 397 mb is free

from the above we see that the size of existing image is around 81 mb.

Check the size of the image you want to download from cisco website and check if the image is less than 397 mb ,if it is you could copy that image onto the sup-bootdisk: above otherwise you will have to delete  the existing image from sup-bootdisk: and then copy the new image

When in cisco site you see flash and memory requirement for the image ,that is not the actual size of the image rather the standard sizes of the flash and DRMA for the device the image is meant for.

Hope above clarifies your doubt.
