6880 booting issue

I ran into some issues with a pair of 6880s booting. I racked up 2 c6880-X-LE switches and done the following:

 

  •  powered on both switches
  •  copied latest ios c6880x-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.152-1.SY6.bin to both switches (verified md5 of ios before copying)
  • changed bootvar and reloaded ok with new ios on both switches
  •  deleted old ios and reload again ok to confirm new ios boot
  •  done a wr erase and reloaded
  •  both switches then booted "Governator Boot Rom :Upgradable Region"

 

I logged the switch booting into "Governator Boot Rom :Upgradable Region" - see attached. Once booted, the console had an "SP5>" prompt. When I typed ? for help the console displayed a number of TAC looking commands (also in attached output).

 

I reloaded a switch and broke into ROMMOM. Before making any changes, the output of "set" in ROMMOM looked like:

When I tried to view the contents of the bootdisk I got the following:

When I tried to boot from tftp image I got the following (I could ping ok between the switch and tftp server after using the set commands):

I then tried the following:

BOOT=bootdisk:c6880x-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.152-1.SY6.bin

reset

 

Now the switches boot up ok. I've set up a few 6880s before with no issue. I'm assuming this was user error on my part. Can anyone tell me why the switches booted they way they did and why ROMMON wouldn't let me view bootdisk:?

 

I'm working on getting these switches on contract so that I can contact TAC but was hoping someone could throw some light on this.

Wait ...
WTF ... That's the problem.

Config-register value 0x2102 means "boot the IOS found in the boot variable statement".  

But in the configuration, the boot variable string is EMPTY.  

Chassis-based system has a "funny" way of booting.  If the config-registry is 0x2102 and there is no valid boot variable string or the boot variable string is pointing to the wrong IOS file, the line card will immediately boot into ROMmon. 

However, if you change the config-registry value to 0x2101, this means "boot the first valid IOS found".  

So the choice is either put a valid boot variable string in the config (boot system flash bootdisk:c6880x-ipservicesk9-mz.SPA.152-1.SY6.bin) or change the config-registry value to 0x2101.

Looks like someone loaded a developer image into the supervisors.

Can you post the complete output to the command "sh version"?  I want to see what version is the ROMmon.  I wonder if this is CSCuw69688.

Thanks for the quick reply Leo. Requested output is below. Switches were brand new out of the box but had been in storage for about 18 months. One of the switches sup has an amber light but passes diagnostics ok.

I believe this is the problem.  ROMmon needs to be upgraded.  

The Release Notes from ROMmon version 15.2(02r)SY4 can be found HERE.  This ROMmon version fixes a Bug ID CSCuw69688 (Cisco internal only).

I followed the upgrade steps and it looked fine until step 3 (according to documentation this step should show the upgraded rommon). I tried the reload in Step 4 but I was back to square one with the switch booting into "Governator Boot Rom :Upgradable Region". I broke into ROMMON and configured the BOOT option again so that the switch booted ios image. Output is below.

So if you reboot again, does it boot properly or is it still doing it again?

Yes, switch successfully boots ios on reload. I don't have any boot statements in the config as yet (I'll add one just now), The ROMMON upgrade attempt seemed to clear the BOOT variable so I had to redo it. See below for output.

I added a boot statement and tried the ROMMON upgrade again. For the 6880 the documentation says to copy the upgrade file to bootflash: and do the upgrade from there. I did this and the upgrade was a success - see show ver below.

 

If there are no boot statements or boot variables, shouldn't the switch boot into ROMMON? I've never see this ""Governator Boot Rom :Upgradable Region" booting before?

Depends on the config-registry value.  If the boot variable statement is pointing to the wrong IOS file (or the file is missing) or there is no boot variable statement: 

  • 0x2101 will IGNORE boot variable statement and boot the first valid IOS file found in the bootflash: or bootdisk: 
  • 0x2102 will read the boot variable statement and, finding that the statement "invalid", will boot into ROMmon.

When a new supervisor card is shipped it has a config-registry value of 0x2101.

The issue is that with a confreg of 0x2102 and no valid boot statements, the 6880s don't boot into rommon. They boot the linux shell below.

 

When I break into rommon I can't view the contents of bootdisk or issue boot commands (even after the rommon upgrade). The bug CSCtq26164 (for asr1ks) is the problem I'm having in rommon and the given workaround works for me (although I have to do this every time I break into rommon).

 

The switches are booting fine with boot statements. Once the switches are on contract I'll contact TAC about the switches booting the linux shell below rather than into rommon.

I have the same problem, but the box doesn't even go into Rommon mode where I put the pendrive the first time and then it returned to the same error code 0x04. What keys do I use to enter Rommon mode because I've tried everything, the strange thing is that with a pendrive it was the first time on the first box and the second time without any response.

An update was done but I realized that when it is pointed to flash, the box doesn't respect it and returns to the same error where it hangs. I updated to the latest recommended version and checked the boot and the same problem came back, something is blocking Rommon that doesn't work. let me solve the problem or get into it, which is the most bizarre

It was reporting a problem with Nvram command were executed as below

erase /all nvram:
