Hi,

We have a directly connected 1 giga Ethernet link between  7600 ES+ 20xGE SFP/Cisco 7606-s port and a Cisco 3560, we have tried all combination of duplex and speed settings cat5/6 cable change; but we  are getting packet loss, please advise where could be the problem ?

Hello Mohamed

Do you have control-plane protection enabled on your 7600-series router?
Have a look at show policy-map control-plane on your 7600 to see if you have any pings denied by CoPP.

Best regards,
Martin

Hello Martin;

first thanks for your replay;

I did a show policy-map control-plane but i haven't any result

New_Router_Core_CA1_ALG#show policy-map control-plane
New_Router_Core_CA1_ALG#

how can I enable control-plane protection ? or have you any other suggestion ?

best regard.

Benchabane Mohamed.

Hi Mohamed

I was just wondering whether you configured any policy there, because with control-plane protection you can limit inbound traffic like pings to prevent them from overrunning your device. So if the rate of incoming ICMP echo-requests exceeds a predefined threshold, you start dropping.

Here's a link with configuration details: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/7600/ios/15S/configuration/guide/7600_15_0s_book/dos.pdf

On some platforms it's enabled by default, on yours it's apparently not.

Do you have any QoS implemented on the link between the 7600 and the 3560? Something that would rate-limit traffic, or drop packets in case of congestion?

What happens when you try to send 500 pings at a time, then wait for a few seconds and then repeat? Do you still get drops?

Best regards,
Martin

Hi Martin,

We don't have any QoS implemented on the link between  the 7600 and the 3560, we have tried to send 500 pings at a time and wait and send others but we are getting a random packet loss, some times there is some packet loss some other time not. as you can notice on the below output:

New_Router_Core_CA1_ALG#ping 10.20.0.104 repeat 500 size 1500
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 500, 1500-byte ICMP Echos to 10.20.0.104, timeout is 2 seconds:

We had some doubt about the cisco 3560 switch, so we added a new link with another 4948 switch and have done some simultaneous pings tests to both 3560 and 4948 SW and we were very surprised that the packet loss occured at the same time ! do you any clue, thanks for your help

Mohamed

Hi Martin,

Do you have any ideas or recommendations or any suggestions please ?

Best Regards,

Mohamed.

Hello Mohamed

Would it be possible for you to post an output of show running-config from the 7600?

Best regards,
Martin
