Hi all. First off, I am not well versed in some of this stuff (particularly VLAN-related) so please bear with me.
I have an 891W router in which I am trying to configure wireless (AP will be autonomous). My goal is simply to get a single WLAN going, nothing fancy. This would take 1 minute on a Linksys but it is turning out to be anything but straightforward on this ISR unfortunately yet I'm sure this is basic for those with experience.
I had started by using CP Express. In there, selecting Wireless on the left in Tasks, I then set the following:
Basic Configuration tab
- hostname
- CLI secret password
- IP address/subnet mask, 192.168.0.2/24
- The IP for the router itself is 192.168.0.1/24
Network Configuration tab:
- No netowrks showing, so I click Add
- Specified the network name (SSID)
- Not knowing better,I set the VLAN to 1, no checkmark in Native VLAN field
- Set Security to WPA Personal, checkmarks in both TKIP and AES
- Specified the secret key
- Set it to Broadcast SSID
- Clicked Ok, got popup message saying "VLAN 1 cannot be used for non native wireless network"
I have no idea what this means nor what a Native VLAN is so my only option was to put the checkmark in.
End result is that my wireless devices cannot see this network. I have no idea why.
Since then I have looked at the actual web-interface of the AP itself (aka, Launch Wireless Application button available in CP Express), and gone to the CLI on the AP and the router and did some show run stuff.
What I see basically is that there is a wlan ap 0 interface, a GE0 interface that seems to be the internal interface between the AP and the other internal interfaces of the router, and of course the external interfaces (WAN, LAN).
It seems that IP addressing is only applied to VLAN's, not the interfaces themselves. This confuses me and also what I'm unsure of is what interface (or VLAN) should have what IP address. It was my thinking that the router LAN-side (FE8) would be 192.168.0.1 and the AP would be 192.168.0.2, and that's that. But show run on both the router and the AP consoles just leaves me lost. Further, I am not even sure if IP addressing has anything to do with the fact that my wireless devices are not even picking up the SSID broadcast.
Completely lost. Please help
