9606r copper SFP interface issues

Hello,

We recently installed a 9606r for a campus core and we have had some troubling issue with devices falling off/dropping traffic.

We have a few line cards 9600-lc-48YL for Copper SFP's. These line cards are heavily populated (all 48 slots used) and we have had 3 devices exhibit this issue. (one a pc, one a cisco firewall and one a sophos xg firewall). The SFP are GLC-TE version 3.

What will happen is the device plugged into those will stop responding correctly, a "show int status" will show the port is still up and connected and looks happy but the errors continue. The one thing I notice is when doing a "show int status x/x/x link" command, the UP time on the link is always being reset while devices not having the problem are showing their link uptime congruent with the entire switch uptime (or physical up/down of that device uptime).

Troubleshooting steps we have taken:

We have tried new Cisco SFP, offbrand SFP, device reboots, speed/duplex locking/auto and even new cabling but nothing has resolved it, the issue will reoccur within minutes/hours.

Fortunately we have another 9606r which we ended up moving these devices too and they have stayed solid on that one so we are focusing on firmware differences on the line cards between the 2 systems but we are waiting for Cisco guidance as we have a TAC case going but wanted to see if the collective brain trust of Cisco community had any insights.

Thanks!

What firmware is the chassis on?

How many GLC-TE per line card?

17.8.1r(FC1) and the line cards are showing 17.12.04

The line cards are typically full, 48 slots used, we had the issue on different slots (slot 1 line card and slot 6 line card)

The 2nd 9606r that doesn't have the issue is on :

17.31r (FC2)  with line cards showing 17.03.04 and these line cards are not as full as the other chassis.

- Check logs on the device when making a problematic connection, or even better issue the command
terminal monitor on an SSH connection to have a follow up of console messages.
 - Use latest advisory software version , if not yet done :

Why use a 9600-LC-48YL and load it with GLC-TE instead of 9600-LC-48TX?

That is what my boss ordered...

Let me start to say that copper-based SFP draws more power than laser-based optics.

C9600-LC-48YL is primarily for laser optics.  And because of this, it is designed with a limited amount of power plus a bit more for extra use.

If the entire C9600-LC-48YL is using copper-based SFP, there is a chance the line card's power allowance is not enough.
