Reset administrator password

Sorry if it's not for this section of the forum.

So, i have the 300 24p managed switch and i did get the password from the previous IT guy.
The console port of the switch is serial and the other side is a 3j45 plug.
I'm trying to connect my laptop on the console port(serial) of the switch, but i can't seem to find the serial Line for Putty.

How can i get this fixed?security
Please help me out.

Kind regards,

Ivan Djakie

First check that the console port on your 300 24P managed switch uses a serial RJ-45 connection. You'll need a RJ-45 to DB9 serial cable or an RJ-45 to DB9 adapter (if your laptop only has a DB9 serial port).

If your laptop does not have a serial port, you may need a USB-to-Serial adapter (USB to DB9) and a DB9-to-RJ-45 cable.

Hello Aziz,

No the switch had a serial port and have to types of cables. A rj45 to usb and a serial to rj45. So i can only use the serial to rj46 cable.

I have to check the amount of pins.

So, can i get the job done with this cable or do i need to buy a new one?

Sorry english is not my first language, so it’s not that clear to me.

Thank you

Dear Ivan Djakie

If your switch has an RJ45 console port, then the Serial to RJ45 cable should work.

If your PC doesn’t have a DB9 serial port, you will need a USB-to-Serial (DB9) adapter to connect it.

If you have a DB9 serial port on your PC, you do not need a new cable.

If your PC only has USB ports, you need a USB-to-Serial (DB9) adapter to use the serial-to-RJ45 cable.

If the RJ45 to USB cable is a Cisco USB console cable and recognized by your computer, you don’t need a new cable.

Hello Aziz,

Dit is the console port of the switch and also the cable that i have.
Fro what i undersrand, this isn't enough to get the job done?

If your laptop has a DB9 port: The cable is correct.

If your laptop only has USB ports: You need a USB-to-Serial adapter or a USB-to-RJ45 console cable.

If you want a simpler solution, get a USB-to-RJ45 console cable (such as the Cisco USB Console Cable).
