ARP aging time

Hi

Anyone can help me to understand ARP aging time in windows,switch,router 

please tell me how much is the aging in that devices and why they differs ?

ARP (address resolution protocol) is a mechanism for resolving ip addresses to mac addresses. A cache or table of this information is maintained on devices running IP, which as you mention could be windows hosts, switches or routers.

 

Ageing time of individual entries in the ARP cache, which is defined as the time where if no ARP request has been seen for a device on a network, the IP address and corresponding MAC address pair will be taken out of the ARP cache. If an ARP request for this host is subsequently received it goes back in the cache. 

 

For routers the default ageing time is 4 hours, configured in seconds so 14400.

Windows hosts have a random ageing time between 15-45 seconds (2 minutes on older windows hosts).

For switches we need to be careful not to confuse the ARP cache with the mac address-table (aka the CAM table) which simply remembers which mac addresses are on which switchports. If there are IP addresses configured on the switch then there will potentially be ARP entries, in which case the default ageing time of 4 hours also applies.
