Hi folks,
I'm trying to upload a new IOS to a CISCO ASR 1001 but the FTP session ( via putty) keeps kicking me out after approx 1 hr. The IOS is 400MB in size. I get the error server unexpected closed the network connection. The FTP server is on my workstation. I have used this server for many other routers so I don't believe its a server side issue. But I could be wrong.
The router is a bout 4000 miles away from me so it takes a while. The session idle time keeps going up as well. Why does it go up during an ftp session.
How can I keep the session going for about 2 hours? I cannot find a setting to change this.
Thanks
John

The FTP control session is idle during the transfer of the file. So some component, a stateful firewall or a NAT device in the path or the server itself kills the control session after the idle time and with it all dependent transfers.
Reconfigure the server or (if you have the possibility) any firewall/NAT timeout in the path.
Another solution could be "service tcp-keepalives" if the server refreshes the idle timer after receiving a keepalive.

Assumption is that you are remote and connecting on a VTY. Check your exec-timeout. I ran into this problem trying to transfer a 350MB+ across the pond. The SSH session was timing out and dropping the connection to the router.
