Beginner question - 2 laptops same Switch and VLAN, but can Ping

Hi I'm new to networking, and have 2 questions (simple questions I hope):

1) I have a cisco 3560, I have successfully connected 1 laptop to the console port using a blue console cable via putty and can work with the config (fab)! I have connected a second laptop to the switch. I can ping VLAN 1 just fine from both laptops, so both laptops can see the switch. However, I can not ping from one laptop to the other. Why not and what do I need to do to fix this?

2) I have a small talktalk wireless home hub, which I would like to use to access the cisco 3560. How do I connect this hub to my cisco 3560 switch to enable me to connect both of the above laptops to my 3560 wirelessly ?

Thanks in advance

Am I correct in understanding that one PC connects to the switch by console cable and the second PC connects to the switch by Ethernet cable connected to a switch port? If you really want both PCs to communicate then both PCs should have an Ethernet connection to the switch.

It might help us understand your particular issue if you would post the current running configuration of the switch. Also please tell us what IP address and mask are used for PCs and for the vlan 1 interface.

When I read a post that describes a problem where a PC can ping something but that something is not able to ping the PC my first thought is that it is likely that the PC is running some firewall or has some security policy that does not allow ping to the PC. Please check the PC and disable the firewall or other security policy and test ping again.

check Windows Fw, disable and test it.

Hi there,

regarding question 1 I agree with @Richard Burts suspicion of host based firewalls.

As for your second question. By default the switch will have all switchports in mode access assigned to VLAN1. This means you should be able to connect it directly to your talk talk device via one of the LAN ports and you will be able to reach the laptops....assuming you have resolved the issue highlighted in you first question.

cheers,

Seb.
