Best Practices for Stack Switch Refresh

Currently I have 2 stacked WS-C3850-24Ts running 16.12.08 and I will be replacing that stack with a stack of 2 C9200L-24P-4G running 17.09.04 -- are there any known best practices or tools for copying the configurations to reduce manual config adjustments?

is the switch acting as layer 2 (exiting one) and you have same License level on New Cat 9200L ?

You can do below steps :

1. Build Cat 9200 L stack offline

2. Copy the 3850 config(required one)

3. Paste to Cat 9200 - make sure all the config accepted as expcted.

4. if you like smooth switch over

5. Mount the new Cat 9200 on top of the exiting stack.

6. establish Trunk between Old and new (make sure on the new any Layer 3 interface config - put then in shutdown)

7. move the end device connection one at a time to New switch and test it.

8. Once all the patches moved. (with the small downtime, move the Uplink and SVI any to new switch)

9. by shutdown old switch SVI and move the Uplink to new switch.

10 shutdown the trunk link to old switch - Leave the exiting stack on for sometime (until alls table before you remove)

Once all working week or 2 weeks power off and remove the old switch (this is the best practice and test all works as expected)

Hello @balaji.bandi,

Compare the configurations of the 3850 stack with the desired configurations for the 9200L stack. Identify differences and changes that need to be made for compatibility with the new hardware and software version.

Modify the configuration file to make it compatible with the Cisco Catalyst 9200L series. This may include adjustments related to interfaces, port configurations, VLANs, and any specific features or capabilities of the 9200L switches.

--Start with basic configurations (e.g., VLANs, interfaces) and then proceed to more specific configurations based on your network requirements.

--Labeling or marking the cables during the migration is a crucial step to ensure a smooth transition and to minimize confusion.

For the c9200 stack, please follow references: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst9200/software/release/17-9/configuration_guide/ha/b_179_stck_mgr_ha_9200_cg/managing_switch_stacks.html

Best regards

The configurations are not compatible to un-editted cut-n-paste and this is due to the location of the VLANs in the configuration.

Copy the configuration off the 3850, move the VLANs below the "boot" section.

Make sure to include the following commands:

software auto-install enable
qos queue-softmax-multiplier 1200
