In order to use a boot statement does the config register have to be 0x2102 . If the register is currently 0x2101 does it just look for the 1st image in bootflash and load that regardless if a boot statement is specified or not ?

I believe it just has to end in 0x02+. I believe you are correct about 0x2101.
