Hi,

i found it's a bit confusing on these wording found at C6500 chassis.

Question 1

What is these term, and how really what diffrentiate between.

(a) bootflash:

(b) disk0:

(c) sup-bootdisk:

(d) sup-bootflash:

Question 2

when i type show sup-bootdisk and show sup-bootflash, both show that having the identical image file and attribute. It make no different on this? Are they actually the same thing?

Question 3

For the 6500 booting process, is it using either bootflash:, sup-bootflash: or sup-bootdisk: to load and boot a Cisco IOS Software image.

the command for statically configure boot variable is "boot system flash sup-bootdisk:image-name"

Thanks

Noel

The Catalyst 6500 supervisor engines has:

1) internal flash memory devices:

  • model prior Sup2T has two internal flash memory devices, one being the route processor (RP) flash and the other being the switch processor (SP) flash. SP flash is used to store the boot image and is referred to as sup-bootflash during normal operation. RP flash is referred to as bootflash during normal operation.
  • Sup2T has one internal flash memory used to store the boot image referred to as bootdisk during normal operation

2) external flash memory devices as CompactFlash slots:

  • one ore two (depending of the model of the supervisor engine) referred to as disk0 and disk1

Please look at the following documents:

What about sup-bootdisk?

Initially, Sup720 has switch processor (SP) 64-MB internal flash memory in the form of memory module (DIMM). In this case, SP flash is referred to as sup-bootflash.

Subsequently, Sup720 has switch processor (SP) 512-MB internal flash memory in the form of CompactFlash in the CompactFlash Adapter inserted in the DIMM socket. In this case, SP flash is referred to as sup-bootdisk.

IOS historically supports both name for switch processor (SP) flash -  sup-bootflash & sup-bootdisk for Sup720, Sup720-10GE...

Bootable images are stored in sup-bootflash/sup-bootdisk for the Sup720, Sup720-10GE and bootdisk for Sup2T...

absoultely clear

I don't know there is a different terminology used between\ SUP720 and SUP2T

Thanks

With the SUP2T there's just one onboard flash, called "bootdisk", but you can use "bootflash:" in the config to alias to it.

There's a couple more links in this thread, if you're still curious.
