C9300-48P and C9300-24UXB mixed stacks (mixing high scale models with regular 9300 switches)

Hi,

 

According to the 9300 series datasheet :

Mixed stacking between 9300 and 9300 higher/increased scale platforms is not supported. You cannot stack fixed uplink models (C9300L SKUs) with modular uplink models (C9300 SKUs) or other Catalyst switches, e.g. Cisco Catalyst 3850 and 3650 Series. Any combination of C9300 models can form a stack. Separately, any combination of C9300L models can form a stack.

Catalyst 9300 higher scale SKUs (C9300-24UB, C9300-24UXB, C9300-48UB) need to be stacked with other higher scale models in order to achieve a stack with the higher scale supported by these models.

 

I'm confused with the statements above.

* Are they referring to mixing 9300L with 9300 switches, which obviously is not possible?

* Or are they referring to mixing for example C9300-48P and C9300-24UXB being not supported?

 

The latter would make their last statement redundant. However lets say mixing C9300-48P and C9300-24UXB is supported. If I refer to the scale diagram (see picture in attachment), that would mean that, if I see things correctly, mixing those stacks would result in limitations for the whole stack as displayed in the left column. My question then, what happens to the buffers on the C9300-24UXB, will the switch itself be able to use it's 64MB buffers completely, or are these buffers also limited to 32MB after adding this switch to a mixed stack?

Hey!

Yes, mixing Catalyst 9300L and 9300 is absolutely not possible.

The guide states that platforms with increased resoources should only be stacked with platforms that also have increased resources.

So you should not stack 9300-48P and 9300-24UXB together, if you really want to utilize the increased resources of the UXB model.
If you do not care about the wasted resources, you can stack them though..

I usually do not recommend mixed stacks.
Be sure to test some stuff on those mixed stacks before you put them into production!

9300L and 9300 are indeed not mixable, they also have a different stackwise port. 9300L uses Stackwise320, and the regular 9300 use Stackwise480.

You can mix models in the 9300 series, also would not recommend it because of confusion it may cause. One reason I once had to do it because the 9300-48UN (multigig) do not support 10MB port speeds, and there was a need for certain legacy gear to be connected on 10MB, I then added in a 48U switch
