C9400-SUP-UPG-LIC= 9400 Stackwise Virtual Requirements

Hello all,                                                                                                                                                                                              we have a customer which has a single 9407 as a Core. Now it is the moment to double the core and to realize a stackwise virtualbetween the two chassis. The 9407 has a C9400-SUP-1. As the HA Configuration guide suggest, with this SUP model we have to upgrade license:

Restrictions for Cisco StackWise Virtual

  • Cisco StackWise Virtual is supported on Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series supervisor 1 module (C9400-SUP-1) and Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series supervisor 1XL module (C9400-SUP-1XL). The feature requires a special, additional, C9400-SUP-UPG-LIC= license with Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series supervisor 1 module (C9400-SUP-1). Cisco StackWise Virtual is also supported on Cisco Catalyst 9400X series supervisor 2 module (C9400X-SUP-2) and Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series supervisor 2XL module (C9400X-SUP-2XL).

If someone has already had this kind of problem and can help, our questions are the following:

1) Is this kind of license (C9400-SUP-UPG-LIC=) included in DNA Advantage (Network Advantage)                                                2) Do we need NR. 1 license for each SUP-1? So taht we need Nr. 2 licenses for a Stackwise virtual (pair of C9400), or NR.1 license will suffice?                                                                                                                                                                             3) Is this license SMART so that it will be accounted to the customer smart account? In case it is RTU license how we could activate it? I haven't find any guide on Cisco CCO documentation.

Thank you very much

Hello @dugolotti.

To address your questions regarding the C9400-SUP-UPG-LIC= license for enabling Cisco StackWise Virtual on a pair of Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series chassis with SUP-1 modules, here are the detailed answers:

  1. Is this kind of license (C9400-SUP-UPG-LIC=) included in DNA Advantage (Network Advantage)?

No, the C9400-SUP-UPG-LIC= license is a separate license specifically required for enabling the StackWise Virtual feature on C9400-SUP-1 modules. It is not included in the DNA Advantage (Network Advantage) license. You will need to purchase this license separately.

  1. Do we need one license for each SUP-1? So that we need two licenses for a StackWise Virtual (pair of C9400), or will one license suffice?

Yes, you will need one C9400-SUP-UPG-LIC= license for each SUP-1 module. Since you are configuring StackWise Virtual with two C9400 chassis, each having a SUP-1 module, you will need to purchase two licenses, one for each SUP-1 module.

  1. Is this license SMART so that it will be accounted to the customer's smart account? In case it is an RTU license, how could we activate it?

The C9400-SUP-UPG-LIC= license is a Smart License, meaning it should be managed and accounted for in the customer's Cisco Smart Account.

    • Smart License Activation: Once you purchase the license, it should be assigned to your Cisco Smart Account. You can then activate it by ensuring your device is connected to Cisco's Smart Licensing Server (CSSM). Follow these steps:
      1. Register your device to the Smart Licensing Server by executing the license smart register idtoken <token> command, where <token> is the registration token obtained from the Smart Licensing portal.
      2. Confirm that the license is recognized and in compliance by using the show license status and show license all commands.
    • In case of RTU (Right-To-Use) License: If you have an RTU license, it typically means you are allowed to use the feature based on an honor system, and you may not need to connect to Cisco’s Smart Licensing Server. However, RTU licensing is being phased out in favor of Smart Licensing. If you have to activate it, you would usually enable it through the CLI on the device with a command such as license boot level <feature-name>, but it's best to check the most recent Cisco documentation or contact Cisco support for specific guidance on RTU licenses if applicable.

For additional guidance, you can refer to the Cisco Smart Licensing Guide for the Catalyst 9400 series or contact Cisco TAC for support (and they will help for sure.....)
