Cables for connecting 10gig ports on 6509E sup

This might be a simple question but just want to make sure.

We would like to trunk our core switches using 10gig ports on supervisor module. We have purchased X2-10GB-SR transceiver modules but wondering what cables should be used for connecting? Are there any special cables or I can use standard multimode fiber cables (used for connecting SFP transceivers). Switches sit side by side, so distance doesn't matter but should get 10gig speed.

Supervisor engine model is:

5  Supervisor Engine 720 10GE   VS-S720-10G

Thanks,

Karthik

On Sup-720-VS the 10Gig interface are SC, so you need MM fiber patch cord with SC connectors on both sides.

Thanks Reza for the reply.

I thought we need different type of cables to obtain 10 gig speed. Found the following on the cisco documentation.

X2-10GB-SR=

10GBASE-SR X2 transceiver module for MMF, 850-nm wavelength, SC duplex connector

Cables for 10Gig (SC)

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/OL_6974.html

WS-G5484=

1000BASE-SX GBIC transceiver module for Multi mode Fiber (MMF), 850-nanometer (nm) wavelength, dual SC/PC connector

Cables for GBIC (SC):

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/OL_6981.html

Do they mean same type of cables in both cases?

Thanks,

Karthik

Hi,

for 10Gig connectivity:

The part number you posted above (X2-10GB-SR=) is for the X2 MM module itself which is correct  So, you need to have a MM fiber patch cord with LC  type connectors on both sides of the cable..

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

for 1Gig connectivity

you need to have SFP modules on your switches.  The part number is

GLC-SX-MM=

1000BASE-SX SFP transceiver module for MMF, 850-nm wavelength, dual LC/PC connector

So, for this module you need to have MM fiber patch cord with  LC  type connectors on both sides of the cable.

SC to SC cable for 10Gig

LC to LC cable for 1Gig

I am assuming both switches are 6500 with Sup-720-VS

I hope it is clear now

Reza

Perfect! Thank you.

Glad to help

Also, here is the correct cable (5 meters) and the connectors for your 10Gig connectivity
