Cannot configure Layer 2 Multicast Snooping on WS-C3850-48T

Hi all

We have a receiver, which stream data over multicast stream to our system.

No I got a problem, I cannot configure the multicast snoopin on the WS-C3850-48T.

If I do that on a simple HPE OfficeConnect 1820 with webGUI I can just simply activate multicast snooping and multicast querier on that VLAN 1 and that's it!

But on the Cisco switch C3850 I do not know, why the stream is not sending.

The port is blinking green/orange.

I just configured the switch as like that.

Global: ip igmp snooping

Global: ip igmp snooping querier

I can see the igmp group in the "sh ip igmp snooping groups" command.

I also tried to configured the vlan 1 again with an vlan 1 ip address, but it is still not working.

I hope someone can help me quickly.

Thank you and best regards,

hpinvent

Hello
Can you elaborate on how this 3850 is physically connected into the network in relation to where the MC source resides, Can you post a simple topology and maybe the configuration of the switch?

Hi Paul

It ist just a standalone switch with a few devices clients and servers connected.

And the multicast receiver (signal receiver) is also connected to this standalone switch. A client try to connect it with a program to get the signals (multicast stream).

The topology is simple:

Multicast receiver === Cisco 3850 === Windows 10 Client

I do not have any config of the switch, because it is in a special environment. But tried every IGMP configurations withouth success.

With the HPE OfficeConnect switch, it is that simple. Only have to activate "multicast snooping" and "multicast querier" and that's it.

I think it can not be that difficult on the 3850.

Thanks a lof for your support!

Hello

show ip igmp snooping mrouter
Have you tried disabling ibgp snooping and test?

Do you have a l3 address for vlan 1, if so enable pim sparse-dense mode

Let us know how you get on?

Hi Paul
Do I really need to disable ibgp snooping? I thought it is disabled by default. But I will try it tomorrow and will let you know.

Yes I do have a l3 address for vlan 1 and also tried it with pim sparse-dense mode, without success.

Will let you know asap.

Thanks and best regards,

Hi Paul

show ip igmp snooping mrouter give me this output:

Vlan ports
---- -----
1 Router

It was really late yesterday, but what is excactly ibgp snooping? Isn't it about routing? But I do not need l3 only l2.

On vlan 1 I also enabled pim sparse-dense mode withouth success.

I am not sure if I need to enable pim sparse-dense mode. For me this is also l3, right?

Thanks in advance for your support.

hpinvent

Hi Paul

On the HPE OfficeConnect switch, the configuration is as follow:

#

igmp-snooping

#

vlan 1

igmp-snooping enable

igmp-snooping version 3

igmp-snooping querier

#

interface Vlan-interface1

ip address 172.17.10.10 255.255.0.0

That's it.

I think now the same configuration to move to a Cisco switch can't be that difficult.

Best regards,

hpinvent

Is this where you mc source resides, if so that port description doesn't look like a 3850 switchport?

show ip igmp snooping groups

Suggest to keep snooping active and snooping querier , change to igmpv2 and test again

Also post out of
debug ip igmp snooping x/x/x/ <mc source

Hi Paul

Now I got this here:

Vlan ports
---- -----
1 Switch

Now it is a switch not a router. I am not sure what i changed. And yes, it is where the MC source resides.

The Cisco Switch is currently on igmp v2 NOT v3. I just wrote the config from the HPE Switch, NOT cisco switch.

This command looks good to me:

#show ip igmp snooping groups
Vlan Group Type Version Port List

1 239.165.90.10 igmp v2 Gi1/0/21
1 239.255.255.250 igmp v2 Gi1/0/21

This is the output of debug ip igmp snooping x/x/x/ <mc source

I don't see any Mroute port just a client , as a test just disable mc routing and snooping entirely on the switch and see if it works via broadcast only.

Hi Paul

There is no Mroute port just a client and a receiver. Also mc routing was never enabled. And it will do not work via broadcast only.

I am speaking about Multicast on L2 NOT L3! The HPE switch is just a cheap L2 switch and can do that. So i am still don't get it, why it is so hard to configure it on the Cisco switch.

Best regards,

hpinvent

Hello

It isnt, I understand its all L2, just wanted to make sure you didn't have MC enabled, Also are you confirming you have tried disabling snooping it still doesn't work, correct, and the source is defiantly active?

Do you have end to end connectivity - mc source<>mc receiver

Hi Paul

Alright, thanks for your answer. Yes, I can confirm that if snooping is disabled the stream still doesn't work and the source is definitely active.

If i turn on the stream and then connect the ethernet cables from the client and receiver to the HPE switch, it works fine.

Even if I connect it directly from the client to the receiver without switch, it works fine.

Only if the Cisco switch is in the middle, then it won't work.

Best regards,

hpinvent

Hello

Just to confirm, you have ip routing disabled on the switch(which shouldnt matter) and with the switch inbetween the mc src/mc receiver can ping each other?
Can you post the run config of the switch please ( including show version)
