Hello All,
I have some strange problem while trying to use the console to configure Catalyst 4507, Im using rollover cable, normal serial setting (9600-8-none-1-none). Switch has 2 supervisor engines ( Supervisor II-Plus).
The problem is that, I can see everything on the console, normal booting sequence, IOS image decompression, all messages that show normal synchronisation with the other supervisor engine. then when it reaches the part when it says Press Enter to start, I cant type anything, i still can see all the messages (like when I pull the other supervisor engine out) it gives me the message that it was pulled out, yet I cant type anything. Same thing with the second sup-engine. Unfortunately, Telnet and Aux port are not set, so they are unusable.
Can anyone help please? All suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks

Hi Baher,
Can you try another console application beside MS Hyper Terminal like Secure CRT?
Also you can't force the backup Sup to be the primary from the user exec mode, but if every thing is configured correctly you should be able to pull the primary Sup out of the chassis and the backup Sup should become the primary Sup. Then try the console on that Sup.
After all this is one way to make sure your Sup redundancy is working.
Make sure you do this during on outage window and are preperd in case the second Sup does not take over

Hi Reza,
Thanks for your reply
I will try Secure CRT and will let you know if it helped.
So you mean I should pull the primary Sup from its slot and booting up the switch from the secondary Sup (while it is on its slot "2"). If thats what you mean, I tried so many combinations, but dont remember if I did this or not, I will give it a try. But thanks for letting me know about the fact that I cant force the secondary Sup to be primary just by installing it in the primary's slot.
The good thing is that the switch is pulled out of the production datacentre for now, so I can freely work on it without any network outage, the problem is it was supposed to be 1-2 days task , now its been a week and no solution seems to be working.
Let me ask you this, is there any procedure I can do in hardware to delete the start-up config, or to reset the switch to factory default but with keeping the IOS?
Alternatively, is there anyway to make the switch receive config from a text file? without giving it any command? at least I can set telnet password and configure it from there.
Last question, what the 10/100 Mgmt port's function on the Sup?
I cant believe cisco didnt think of restoring the switch, while all aux/telnet/console are inaccessible.....
Thanks for the help everyone....

Thanks Krishna for clearing the Management port's function out for me. This means I still have to issue Ctrl+C command to go to ROMMON mode in case I wanted to use this port. Not gonna help in my case......

Hi krishna, I will check the port physically once Im at the client's site next time. Although Im sure its not the problem. As it was working just fine and stopped suddenly after I issued (erase startup config) then (reload)....it got me to a mode that I only had exit and logout commands, then after rebooting it, I think it got the startup config from the secondary Sup.....after that I lost interaction with console port

Hello Guys,
I was looking at the boot sequence of the switch, and I noticed that the switch is not decompressing the IOS, this is the switch sequence:

anymore ideas guys please?
01-28-2010 09:13 AM
can someone guide me on what to do if a switch is inaccessible via console and telnet?
I really appreciate everyone's suggestions and help...
01-28-2010 09:22 AM
Hi baher
Not sure if the IOS is an issue here.. it does decompress when you do a boot from rommon right ? do you have spare SUP or external flash cards ? If so,you can replace it and see if it solves the issue.. do you have support contract for this device?
Raj

Hi Raj,
Thanks for your reply. To answer your questions:
I havent done a boot from rommon, as I cant even input ctrl+c, is there anyway to go to rommon other than this?
I only have 2 SUPs which are currently installed in the switch chassis, and they both dont have external compact flash on them.
Lastly, unfortunately, I dont have support contract for this switch

Well, this is a long shot, but:
We had this problem that sometimes to cut costs, manufacturers that produce crystals are not producing them very precisely. So what might be reported as 9600 baud is actually 10000 baud or something like that.
So here is what to do:
1. Get any Cisco router however old or new. 2500 will do, and so will 7206. What you need is a router with an aux port. So it needs to be a software router, which have aux ports.
2. Connect AUX port of the router to a CON port on the 4500
3. Login with a console or whatever to the router.
4. Look at the number of the aux port via "show line"
5. Add this number to 2000. E.g. if the AUX is line 33, the result will be 2033
6. Do a reverse telnet:
conf t
int loop 0
ip add 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.255
end
telnet 10.0.0.1 2033
The last number in reverse telnet must be the result of #5
Then see how it is working.
If it still does not work, try to experiment with bit settings, e.g. 8-N-2 and so on, because maybe they are changed on 4500..
01-29-2010 01:09 PM
Hello pavlo,
Apologies for the late reply. Thanks for your advice, I will try this reverse telnet procedure when Im at the client site next week. Just a couple of questions here if you dont mind...
1) The cable between router's aux port and the 4500 con port is suppose to be straight cable, right?
2) Is there any specific config I need to do under the router aux port to establish this connection?
3) In case the 4500 switch has different serial settings, like baud rate or other options, will this reverse telnet by pass this setting?
4) I think my client has 3845 router, it should have aux port as normal, and it should work with no problem, can you confirm?
Thanks again mate, I will let you know if this worked out or not as soon as I try it.
01-31-2010 11:53 AM
Definitely try it. Here are the answers:
1. Yeah, straight cable will do.
2. No specific config. Just make sure router has an active IP address (UP/UP interface - loopback is good) which you are going
3. If it's a little difference (error in manufacturing) then yes, otherwise no. As I mentioned if it's other problem you'd need to try other terminal settings on your PC.
4. Yes, I can confirm that.
Please rate the posts if it'll work
02-03-2010 10:38 PM
Thanks for your reply, I will implement this procedure next week and will get back to you with the results. Sure thing I will rate mate!
Thanks,
Baher
