Catalyst 3750X-12S-S Fiber SFP's not connected

Hello Community,

During commissioning of the above switch I discovered that fiber SFP’s (GLC-LH-SM) do not have links. While the Cat6 SFP’s are readily recognized by each of the switch’s 12 ports, I cannot make fiber ones to communicate with a remote switch.

I have tested fiber SFP’s using an unmanaged switch and determined that they are functional. Also, I used a singlemode fiber patch cable to connect two consecutive ports of the 3750x switch and had a link – the two ports’ LED lights were lit.

The switch isn't stacked.

Below, I have information about the switch using two commands

  1. sh version
  2. show interfaces

I sincerely hope for your feedback on this matter.

Hi,

have you tried crossing the fibres?

Thanks

John

If by crossing the fibers it's implied plugging into different ports, yes. However, I wasn't successful. The only time I had a link (lit LEDs) was when two ends of one fiber patch cable were plugged into two neighboring ports of the Cisco switch.

Get a visible light and see if it the remote end can see it.

Are you suggesting testing fiber continuity? If so, I used two unmanaged switches (identical type to the remote one) in lieu of Cisco and established connection.

Hi,

By crossing the fibres,  i meant swapping around the transmit and receive.

thanks

Yes, I've tried that - removed the duplex bracket of the patch cable and swapped individual pig tails.

Hello,

on a side note, and I am not sure if this has already been mentioned in the thread, what remote switch are you trying to connect to ?

The remote switch is an industrial unmanaged type Stratix 2000 made by Allen Bradley.

Hello,

I have looked at the user manual (link attached) for the Stratix 2000. I assume the SFP slot connection status is OFF when you connect the Cisco SFP ? Is that a direct link, meaning, without any patch panels ?

http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/um/1783-um011_-en-p.pdf

When I connect to the Cisco switch via console, I see the status of the port with SFP is down (noconnect). There are two patch panels between the Cisco and Stratix switches.

Is it physically possible to connect the Cisco directly to the Stratix, that is, with just the fiber cable and without the patch panels ? For testing purposes obviously, and only to eliminate possible problems with the patch panels.

Unfortunately, that's not possible. However, here is food for thought: I successfully connected Stratix to Stratix using the same fiber pull.
