Catalyst 6500 power save while on UPS

Hi,

We have many 6509-Es in wiring closets, each with dual SUP720, multiple 6548 modules and dual power supplies. We are having power maintenance. All these  6509Es have one power supply connected via UPS. The UPSs can support the 6509 for approx 45 - 60 minutes but I'm not sure how long the maintenance activity will continue, So basically I am thinking if there is a way I can reduce the power draw on 6509. Since this will be an after hours activity I can power down 6548 modules. With powering down 6548 modules I can save significant power, I believe, and the UPS can can last longer.

The reason why i don't want to power cycle the switch is that I have had bad experience with SUP720s after power cycle and occasionally it fails on power cycle. During last power maintenance I lost two SUP720s.

I have never tried this before so I am not sure if this is really as significant a benefit as I am thinking. Is there any other approach?

I've got a 6500 with VSS and, since 2009, we've been regularly powering them off (4 times a year) and I've only lost 2 supervisor cards.

But I don't see any relevance to your concern.  Each of your chassis has dual supervisor cards.  If one card fails, you have another.

Personally, I'd power the chassis off by manually than rather let the power kill it.  Base on my experience, I've lost more power supplies when we do NOT manually turn off the power supplies.

Hi, fawad-alam...

Before you perform the procedure of power cycle, I hope you are aware of this issue:
