Catalyst 6509 IOS Upgrade issue

Hi everyone,

we are planning an IOS upgrade for a Cisco Catalyst 6509 Switch with two redundant supervisors with reference: WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE.

we have installed the c6sup22-js-mz.121-27b.E.bin IOS Image (12.1(27b)E, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2))

The Switch Has 458752K/65536K bytes of memory (512MB) from the "show version" Command. and 64Mb on disk0 as "dir disk0:" shows

we decided to upgrade the IOS from 12.1(27b)E to 12.2.18-SXF17a(ED) because we will install a new linecard with reference WS-X6148A-GE-TX.

The IOS image selected is:
s222-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF17a.bin

the hardware from RP and SP are with superv isor and submodules series are:

WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE
WS-F6K-PFC2
WS-F6K-MSFC2

"show version" commands prompts 512MB on DRAM, but when we executed the "remote command switch sh version" DRAM of the Route processor shows: 112640K/18432K (128MB)

the question is:

what value do we have to trust when we attempt to upgrade the IOS: 512MB from "sh version" or 128MB from "remote commmand switch sh version?

if the correct memory value is 512MB, we can upgrade the IOS without problems, but if the correct value is 128MB we should not upgrade this image because DRAM incompatibility.

Hi Damian,

The correct number is 512 from the route processor (MSFC) that "sh ver" shows you.  The remote command is from SP.

I have a final question about my future upgrade to IOS 12.2SX and is related to your answer:

Cisco IOS 12.2SX requires the following hardware requirements in DRAM capacity to operate:

- Switch processor = 256 MB*
- Route processor = 256 MB*

*obtained form "Comparison of the Cisco Catalyst and Cisco IOS Software Operating Systems for Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches", 2007

In my case, and according to your answer,  my RP DRAM is 512MB, but the SP DRAM is 128MB so, we cannot upgrade the IOS from 12.1(27b)E1 to 12.2(17a)SXF because system requierements expressed in Cisco documentation are not acomplished? or, only with the RP DRAm value (512MB) we can proceed to upgrade the IOS without any further DRAM Issues?

well, hjust to close this post:

Our SUp2 has 128MB on SP DRAM and our MSFC has 512MB. So, we can't upgrade IOS Image from 12.1 to 12.2
