Catalyst 9500 VXLAN VTEP on spine

Hello Everybody,

I am doing a design of using Catalyst 9500 as Distribution / Spine and Cat9200 as Access Switch / Leafs. I want to use the same construct as the nexus 9000 => VXLAN encapsulation and BGP EVPN as control-plane.

I would like to know if it is possible to have an VTEP on the Spine. I want to do that because the spine will have the highest speed interface (25Gbps) and I want to connect to my exit point. But my worry is for the multicast underlay traffic (BUM traffic). If the Spine has an VTEP configured on it, it will de-encapsulate the multicast traffic in order to send the packet to its exit point and therefore will not forward to the other leaf the multicast packets.

This question could also be asked for datacenter and Nexus 9000.

Thanks for your help.

Julian

Hi Julian,

VTEP's are the devices that do the VXLAN encap/decap and are the leafs that the VXLAN tunnels form between.

If you want to use 9500 as VTEP's best to use them as the leaf switches and use different switches as spines.

HTH.

Ben
