Is there any advantages over using text mode for the Catos (8.x) config vs Binary? I belive that cisco defaults the mode to binary.

Binary mode is the default mode in CatOS, as you stated (legacy code). The text mode has the advantage that it frees up NVRAM space and if you have a big running configuration in a older Supervisor, this can be beneficial.
The disadvantage is that you need to remember to save the changes after they are made, but you can enable the auto-save feature in CatOS.
