Change Stack-master via snmp?

In looking for a way to see the memory usage for individual members of a stackwise stack. I re-walked the entire 3750 stack MIB and looked through it for any OIDs that break out memory counters for the individual stack members and didn't have any luck.

What would be the effects of changing stack masters every hour, or every 15 minutes, so the counters could watch the memory for each each member at intervals?

Would this be detrimental to stack operation in any way?

Can this be done via SNMP (if so I can write a script to accomplish the task)?

Has anyone tried this before?

Thanks for your input...

Greetings Keith,

Memory statistics for stack members aren't exposed by SNMP. I definitely wouldn't recommend causing a stack master switchover purely to monitor the memory statistics of the members. Is there some reason to monitor these values?, as the majority of control-plane functions are handled by the master.

From the CLI you could use 'remote command all show memory statistics' or similar, it would be simple to parse this output on an external machine for periodic monitoring.

I'm not certain whether 3750 supports the required EEM version at this time, but generally speaking there is a neat method for exposing any CLI output to SNMP using the EXPRESSION-MIB, further details in the following presentation: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/iosswrel/ps6537/ps6555/ps10777/ppt_EASy_Custom_MIB_c78-577847.pdf

Hope this helps,

/Phil
