changing mtu on trunk ports

I have to add two vlans to a trunk link between two Cisco WS-C6509. The link already trunks many other vlans. The two additional vlans require mtu of 9216. What are the consequences of adding "mtu 9216" to the port doing the trunking? Will they reset or will they need to be reset for the larger mtu to take effect thus effecting to already trunked vlans?

Hi,

Increasing the MTU size shouldn't create any problems. You actually have more advantages than disadvantages (if any) by increasing the MTU size as larger packets can be sent throughout the network without fragmentation.

As with any changes in the configuration, I recommend doing so during a maintenance window but you shouldn't see a 'reset' on the port by changing the value.

HTH,
