I recently saw a Cisco document that states the Cisco Aironet 1600 EOL is December of 2016.
I am looking for an inexpensive autonomous 802.11n or ac wireless AP. This is for a small office of only 3 people so there is no need for an expensive WLAN controller. I was originally considering the Aironet 1602 (AIR-SAP1602I-B-K9). What model should I consider instead?

The natural replacement of the 1600/1700 is the 1850. 1850 supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac. 1850 does NOT support Autonomous IOS but Cisco Mobility Express.

Thanks. Can I convert an older model Cisco 1042 to support Mobility Express if I want to add it to the network? If so, how?

Not possible.
