After focusing on the ASR from my previous posts, I was able to get it working as intended and all is well. Now I'm looking to move the ASR's functionality into the 4500-X so that I can decommission the ASR. In my previous tests, it appears there's some kind of fundamental incompatibility in the negotiation between the 2.5G ONT stick and the 4500-X that caused connectivity issues which scrapped the intended plan and required I use the ASR for routing the ISP's connection.
In performing additional research, it appears that I can set the negotiation mode of the ONT stick however I'm not sure what mode to set the stick that would ensure the most compatible option with the greatest chance of success. I know that the 4500-X's ports will either autonegotiate to 1G or 10G, and I believe that the ONT stick can do 1G, 2G, and 2.5G (but no 10G). If my memory is correct, the 4500-X will force 10G connectivity if 'autonegotiate off' is set on the switchport. When I last attempted to put the GPON stick into a 4500-X switchport, 'show interface status' would show '1000baseLX' in the 'Type' field but the stick operated very erratically with connectivity to its untagged management interface, much less its tagged VLAN traffic interface.
The choices I have for the GPON stick are:
- Mode 1 - 1GbaseX with auto-negotiate on. (Default)
- Mode 2 - 1Gb PHY
- Mode 3 - 1Gb MAC
- Mode 4 - 2.5Gb PHY
- Mode 5 - 2.5Gb MAC
- Mode 6 - 2500baseX with auto-negotiate on.
- Mode 7 - 1GbaseT with auto-negotiate off.
Based on the 1G/10G port speeds of the 4500-X, I'm fairly certain that modes 4,5, and 6 will be invalid.
Should I leave it at Mode 1 and let the 4500-X handle the negotiation or should I change it to one of the other modes to hopefully ensure the best compatibility chances with the GPON stick?
Thank you!

Mode 1 1GbaseX with auto-negotiation or Mode 2 1Gb PHY is most likely to succeed. Mode 1 is preferred as it's the default and most compatible with standard Cisco configurations

Hello Mancunian:
I think you're on to something and my fault lies in a different area. I've left it Mode1 for now and will see what else I can uncover.
Thank you for your advice!
