Cisco 6509 IOS Upgrade where to start ??

we have cisco 6509-E with IOS 12.2(18)SXF8 & trying to Introduce this as Service Layer.

I wanted to upgrade the IOS code to 12.2(33)SXI6 OR SXI7 . I do not see any upgrade guide that points to me what are the caveats associated with this.

I found following documents:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_example09186a0080116ff0.shtml#sup720

I can see that I have minimum DRAM 512 for 12;2(33)SXI7 . we may need to order another flash card ( only 128M right now).

1 When I tried to dowload the New IOS Sotware I saw more options( IOS Field Programmle Devices) , IOS Boot images etc..

Is there any certain sequence this need  to happen or some options are because of legacy reason.

2 When I tried to download the software ios I have the two option. I am not sure what this Main diffrence between following IOS :

ADVANCED ENTERPRISE SERVICES SSH s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-33.SXI7.bin

ADVANCED ENT SERVICES SSH (MODULAR) s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-vz.122-33.SXI7.bin

3 According to

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_example09186a0080116ff0.shtml#sup720

when I tried to use boot system command I do not get the option for disk0: or is this normal ?

test(config)#boot system ?

  WORD   TFTP filename or URL

  flash  Boot from flash memory

ftp    Boot from a server via ftp

mop    Boot from a Decnet MOP server

rcp    Boot from a server via rcp

tftp   Boot from a tftp server

Sincerely,

Viral

If you do a dir

you will see its called sup-bootdisk

6500-PE1#dir
Directory of sup-bootdisk:/

    1  -rw-    75345892   May 9 2007 13:44:10 +00:00  s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXE6b.bin

    4  -rw-    33554432  Jun 21 2011 02:36:02 +00:00  sea_console.dat

to actually do the boot system

boot system flash sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservices_wan-mz.122-33.SXJ.bin

do a #sh bootvar to check

p.s i did a similar upgrade from Version 12.2(18)SXE6b

Thank you Rob, that did the trick.

my curiosity about modular image ended ended up with some nice information & I am lucky that I am not in the production yet.

I am using single binary image rather than installed file ( which basically creates file system & load appropriate code when needed ). Now, I am curious to move to installed file image but command install file does not work as described in the follwoing link. I hope somebody have answer for it.
