CISCO 871 router startup config removes

HI Friends,

CISCO 871 router lose it's startup config after few months & we've to connect it through console in order to configure it again. During console access we've found config-register is showing 0x2102 so we can't tell that the router bypass the startup config during the incidence.

This is happening with almost every router we use at few of our branches. Please suggest.

Thanks,

Sudeb

What IOS version (and feature set) are you using?

I would like to understand the symptoms a bit better. How are you determining that the startup config is lost? Is it that the router boots up and takes you to the initial config dialogue or is it something else?

If you do not use the automatic initial config dialogue (just exit from it when it attempts to start) and then do show startup what output do your get?

At the risk of asking the obvious, are you sure that the running config has been saved to startup, and that the startup that you are saving is in the location that the router is looking for as it boots?

when the router boots it comes up with - initial config. (Y/N)

Show start shows - nothing (except factory config)

show version -  showing config register as 0x2102. So I can say startup config is loading.

The router works fine for few months & then suddenly it's start & lost the startup config. So you can understand about saving the config before reloading.

The same things happening with few of our routers. Please help

If the router goes to the Initial Config dialog after booting that is certainly an indication that something is going on with the startup config. I am not clear what you get when you show startup. You say that factory config shows up and I am not clear what this is. Would you be able to explain more about what shows up?

If the router runs for several months, and if show startup does show the startup config, and then it reboots and the startup config is gone then it sounds like there is some hardware issue with the router. Perhaps you might want to open a case with Cisco TAC about that.
