Cisco 891 Initial Configuration - Lost Lost Lost

On a recommendation from a network engineer, I got a used Cisco 891.  Having worked with small business routers most of my working life, I thought this should not be a problem.  However, I had no clue these things used a console and command line to initialize.  I have the console cable, am able to console into the device, but am haphazardly issuing command lines straight out of the PDF manual but cannot get Cisco CP to discover the device.  Moderators, please feel free to move this to the correct forum if needed.

From what I can tell, I am stuck at the point where the manual tells me to enable http server.  I ran the command lines several times, executed write mem where available, but when I run the show services command, http is not enabled.

Some guidance is gladly accepted.  And if you do refere to command lines, please bear with me ... I was reading some other forums and they were speaking of "run this command, run that command" but I could not make out the correct syntax, in what mode, whether it be config or config t, etc.  So I might need a wee bit of handholding.

I'm hoping that once I can get Cisco CP or CPE to discover the device, I can make my way through the GUI to configure since those usually do make sense to me.  As of now, I'm in the thick of it ...

Do you have configure or have any address assigned on any of the interfaces? I think you need one and then try enabling the http server. You can follow the steps in the below link to configure it with the CCP

If this is the 891.. Then you might want to use fa8 or gig 0 interfaces. Otherwise you need to configure the fa4 to be in a particular vlan and configure an svi interface with the IP address. The ports fa 0 to fa 7 are layer 2 switchports.

Alright!  The steps worked.  I was tripping myself up because the FE ports were not active in letting me run a config on the unit.  Had to assign it to GE0-WAN, plug it into my existing network, then I could launch CPE.  But here's where I have a new stumbling block.  Configuration Express lets me log in and make some basic config changes just fine.  I'm trying to do more advanced things with the firewall, specifically QoS, but I can't get CP Pro 2.6 to run properly.  It is able to discover the router but as soon as I click on configure, the application locks up.  Is there an alternate config app available or is there a way to correctly uninstall the software, reinstall?
