Hi
I am thinking on installing 2 stacked WS-C3560X-48T-S switches, however I am wondering what routing capabilities they will have.
On the product overview it states 'Routing: Basic Layer 3 static routing with 16 routes', can someone confirm what this means.
I was hoping to use this switch cluster to route between directly connected VLANS configured on this switch cluster and downstream switches. Will this do the job?

Just to clarify we are talking about 3560X and not 2960-S which the title of your thread refers to ?
For basic routing capabilities you will need minumum of IP Base ie. LAN Base is no good to you. If you wanted to run full EIGRP or OSPF you need IP Services.
Can you post link to where it says 16 routes because i can't find that ?

Sorry for the confusion between the title and the switch model, (pasted the wrong model) The model I was looking to stack are 2 * WS-C2960S-48TS-L. The comment about the routing was from the following page, under the 'High availability' section

Hmmm, my understanding was that the 2960-S was purely a L2 switch and did not do any L3 routing. For L3 routing you need 3560/3750 as a minimum. You are right about the High Availability bit but i can't find any mention of it anywhere else. Also see Table 7 from this doc -

as you can see it states that the 2960-S does not support IPv4 or IPv6 routing.
I haven't used these switches so hopefully someone else with direct experience of them can confirm or deny whether they do routing but i would say no they don't.

I was a bit confused by the conflicting information, and I believe you are correct that it will not support, however I just want to be sure before ruling this option out.
Can anyone with experiance of the 29760-s range comment? Can you use the 'ip routing' command, and then add static routes?

Only 2960S LAN base license supports routing. Here is the ip unicast routing section in the configuration guide.

Thanks very much for clarifying. So apart from the connected routes you can add a maximum of 16 static routes to the routing table ?
Is this the only switch below the 3560/3750 that is able to do ip routing ?

Hi Jon,
My info said the Catalyst 29xx series with LAN base license will support limited amount of static routes starting IOS 12.2(55)SE.

The switch supports 16 static routes (including user-configured routes and the default route) and any directly connected routes and default routes for the management interface. The switch can have an IP address assigned to each SVI. Before enabling routing, enter the sdm prefer lanbase-routing global configuration command and reload the switch.

Thanks everyone,
These switches sound that they are going to do the job, and we will get the benefit for switch stacking.
We only have a few VLANS which will be running on these switches, and also a default route

whilst they do supprot routing, it doesnt appear to actually work...
