I am trying to terminal into the Catalyst Switch 1000 (C1000-8T-RT-E-2G-L).  I am able to connect via port 1 and plug the IP address into my switch and see the GUI configuration.
I want to learn the CLI commands and am trying to connect via putty

I have a USB Insignia PU98635 NIC with an RJ45 connected to the switch console.
I hit the reset button for 4-5 sec as advised.
I have the Cisco USB driver installed.
but when I go into Putty is says:  Unable to open connection to Cisco, Host does not exist.
I see green/amber light flashing at times on my NIC.

Any suggestions. thanks for this newbie to cisco.

Make sure Com port on putty matches with the Com port on your laptop/pc. It should show under setting what Com port your PC is using.

>>> I have a USB Insignia PU98635 NIC with an RJ45 connected to the switch console. <<<
a "normal" switch console is not a network port!  it is s character based serial port.

do'nt be fooled by both use an RJ-45 connector, these are different type of signals/protocols
you need to use a serial port (DB-9) on your PC and a blue cisco console cable,
or a USB-to RS-232 adapter, (not a USB-NIC) and a blue cisco console cable

>>>I have the Cisco USB driver installed.<<<

this is for Cisco devices with a mini-usb console port
here the usb-to-serial converter is built-in into the switch and you can use a USB-to-mini-USB cable to connect to the console port
you do not need this when using  an external USB-to-serial adapter as above.
when connecting your PC will report something like "usb device detected"
and in putty you will need to select COM3 (4,5.....) that has been detected
alternatively you can use another terminal programm (e.g. TeraTerm), where you can see the available COM ports in the serial drop-down list.

I tried Tera Term > Serial > COM5/6 are the only available ports open.

I still cannot connect.

Should I be using a regular RJ-45 into a NIC/USB dongle?

Yes followed exactly. What I found I had to order the Cisco blue cable:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038FM1BA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Cisco Console Cable 6 ft with USB Type A and mini-B / CAB-CONSOLE-USB

And it worked beautifully. You cannot just use a USB NIC dongle with a RJ-45 cable. It does not work.

With the above cable it worked beautifully with: Tera Term / Putty / Hyper Terminal

Thanks for all your help
