Hi, I am trying to make my LAN to work at home. Its pretty small but I am bearly an smart user, noobie if so.
I have a Motorola Cable Modem model SB5101 receiving the internet from Shaw Cable.
from there I have an ethernet cable to my switch (Cisco SE2500)
fro there I have two ethernet cables coming out, one goes to my PC and the other one goes to an Airport Extreme so our laptop can get to the www.
I already called Cisco support and they told me that a switch can manage all the PCs wired, but cannot manage one of them wireless...
I am just here double checking this info... sice this is an unmanaged switch I guess there is no way of accesng an interface to make this happen.
I just hate spending the money in something I wont be using just because I dont know whats going on...
Thanks for your help in advance and happy new year.

You want NAT mapping enabled for sure. Without this you can't have more than one device contacting the Internet at a time.
From what I remember you don't need the default host checked. I don't even know what it does.
As for the second question you probably can just go with the defaults. Just make sure bridge mode is off.

It doesn't sound like you have a router in your network which is advisable to have in any home network.
Using this switch you could technically only have 1 PC connected to the Internet at at time and this is really bad news because the PC would be sitting directly on the public Internet and not behind a router.
You could buy something like the Cisco/Linksys E1000 wireless router and this would do everything you want for a simple home LAN. These routers are manageable but at the same time pretty much come configured to work out of the box.

Hi Elton, thanks a lot for your reply.
I started all of this because the airport wasn't really good managing the LAN to my PC (this one has two LAN ports as well as an USB) so I figued putting something en between to manage the conexion and get my torrents a little more boost.
Unfortunately the few devices I had try so far would be giving me issues with either branch of this small network.
Then I stumped with this and realized it was compatible with MAC and PC... and without more knowledge bought it from CL. I will keep it anyways in case I use some external storage device in the future.
Would the router you are sugesting be fine with Apple and PC in the same network? I dont see why not, but if I get some wireless router I would like to us it fully and get the AirPort out of the way... would it be possible with this
Linksys E1000 to comunicate efectively with the wirless devices (Macbook pro, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy) and keep my torrent client happy?
Thanks so much for the info.

I actually overlooked that you were using an AirPort Extreme. This device should work fine I think you just have things connected wrong.
You want your modem connected to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme and then your PC connected to one of the LAN ports on the airport. You can connect the switch to one of the other LAN ports to extend your network.
I'm sure you know but the AirPort Extreme is managed using airport utility. You just want to make sure that NAT is enabled.
Let me know how this works.

Thanks, Elton.
This all started with that confguration. Except the NAT was disabled , I think. So I started looking for something to get my PC by the Airport without interact with it.
I will give it another try with the NAT enabled, do some speed test for my torrents and see how it goes, I was already coocking some deal from CL for the router you mentioned previously, but saving the money is great.
A couple questions... I am not very wise doing networking stuff.
There are two options in the NAT tab in the airport utility software.
1- Enable default host at: 10.0.1.253 (this value appears when I mark this option)
2- Enable NAT mapping protocol (this I marked as enabled)
would it be OK if I mark number one as well? Or would that create more work to sort things out?
Also about been exposed to public, int he tab for Internet Conexion the last configuration says share a public IP address... then there are these other options:
1- Distribute a range of IP addresses
2- Off (Bridge mode)
Should I select other than the efault?
Thanks a lot,
Sergitin

Thanks alot again, I just performed a speed test and it looks just fine, the same as the pc throught the switch, so I am happy.
Y think the NAT was what had the torrents slugish. I will let you know in the near future if something goes wrong.
Thanks very much... and may new year bring you the best
