Hi All,
What command can we use to check the type of SFP inserted in a switch or Router? I needed to check if the blade in my 4500 switch is populated with any SFPs? Will the command be applicable for other series of Catalyst switches as well?
Appreciate your help.
Cheers

Hi Navneet,
Try with the below commands...
sh diag
sh hard
sh inv
Output depends on software version with later versions displaying more.
Also snmp may show further info...
snmpwalk
Also check the below command...
show-module subslot 9/0 transceiver 0 idprom

Hi Navneet,
If there is an SFP inserted in a port, it will be seen in the 'show inventory' output. If you know the port number, you can also do "sh interface transceiver det" and check on SFP details.

Thanks for your inputs guys. "Sh inv" does not show me the type of SFP installed? If it's a GLC-SX-MM or a GLC-LH-SM etc.. Also, the "sh hw-module subslot 9/0 transceiver 0 idprom" command is not supported in my switch.
Is there any other command that can be useful? My switch is a WS-C4503-E running cat4500e-ipbase-mz.122-46.SG.bin image.
Cheers

Hi Navneet,
As far as I know, there is no command that can tell precisely whether the SFP is a GLC-SX-MM or a GLC-LH-SM. "show inventory" shows the part ID of the SFP installed which can be used to find out the transceiver type.
Try "sh idprom interface gix/y". This command reads the contents from the EEPROM of the SFP installed and I havent seen anything more granular.
Good luck!
Shashank

I could be wrong but the " show interface x/y" command should give you the exact details.
Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is 001b.0c0d.e71b (bia 001b.0c0d.e71b)
Description: Dot1Q Link to Data2Floor2
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
Keepalive not set
Auto-duplex, Auto-speed, link type is auto, media type is 1000BaseCX SFP Cable --> Check this
input flow-control is off, output flow-control is unsupported

Hi Shashank,
sh idprom interface gix/y command gives me the transceiver and connector type. This works for me..
Thanks for your inputs.

Thanks, this helped! On a Nexus switch, you can enter show int e 1/1 transceiver detail for a particular interface, or just show int transceiver detail to get the whole list. It gives you output like this:
Ethernet1/34
transceiver is present
type is 1000base-T
name is 10Gtek
part number is SFP-GE-T
revision is
serial number is CSC1801122544
nominal bitrate is 1300 MBit/sec
Link length supported for copper is 100 m
cisco id is --
cisco extended id number is 4
Since I was looking to see whose SFPs were in which port, the "name" field was very useful.

kindly let me know which value is normal -.5.0 or -40.0 in the optical receive power column, or in other words which value would be best for the optical fiber port
