Confused on 7507 LAN routing throughput

Hello Everyone,

I am currently working with a 7507 (RSP4). I have it set up as a router on a stick with on port with multiple VLAN's trunked to it and the only think it is doing is routing between VLANs. I am seeing some not so good performance resuts from this (gig interface only averages about 40% utilization at best). I started to dig into this and look for the performace secs of this router and I have gotten mixed opinions. I see some data sheets that say it's through put is only 176.64Mbps with CEF switching. I talk to other people and they tell me that it's connected on a gig interface so it should be able to fully utilize this. They say the 176.64Mbps is only WAN throughput.

So I guess I'm confused as to what speed this router should perform at when it is connected to a gig LAN connection for VLAN routing. Can someone please clear this up?

It is strongly depends on what GE module you use - is it VIP-based or may be old one? GEIP2+ as I remember is about 400 Mbps.

Hello Jgarner,

C7507 is not able to perform line rate at GE speeds because it has a shared bus with 1Gbps speed shared among all linecards. Also there is no evident local switching capacity on VIP or GEIP+ modules. I mean there is no evident performance gain when routing between subinterfaces of the same GE port.

There are two 1GBps shared bus on C7513.

We used them some years ago on a mobile operator network and we had to move Vlans to C12000 for the low performance seen in lab tests on routing between subinterfaces.

With GEIP+ we could see roughly 300 Mbps with packets of big size.

It has been a very successful router with modularity and a lot of HW and features.

GEIP is VIP2-50 based and it is 400 Mbps in maximum (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/modules/ps2643/products_white_paper09186a0080091db8.shtml).

GEIP+ is VIP4 based and it is up to 800 Mbps in theory  (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps2033/products_data_sheet09186a0080091ce7.html).

VIP is it's own router (alike 7200) and it can implement forwarding locally.

the question is that when dealing with routing on subinterfaces traffic counts "twice" or even "four times"

We performed  performance tests with traffic generators (SMARTBITS in those times) so we did tests with bidirectional traffic with several different sizes ( from 46 IP size to 1500 IP size).

Practical results were like local switching was not effective, I should have written this

from experience  we cannot expect 800 Mbps per direction from a GEIP+ only 400 Mbps per direction or slightly less.

the marketing figure of 800 Mbps was half-duplex not full duplex

Yes, I agree. 400 Mbps is much more real than 800 due to marketing features In any way this platform is not intended to be used in 1G.
