Connection between Managed and unmanaged switches

Hi all,

Please let me know will the below scenario is going to work?

I have three unmanged switch and one cisco layer 3 switch. Please see attached diagram. If I connect the three unmanaged switch to the Cisco layer 3 switch and each connected port is configured with vlan 10, 20, 30 (as shown in the figure), will it be able to communicate with outside. Means If I connect one machine to first unmanaged switch and configured with IP 192.168.1.x range, connect another machine to the second unmanaged switch and assign the IP 10.0.1.x range, both machine able to get internet. (consider the configuration has already done in firewall and layer switch to get the internet for all vlans).

I would expect it to work, as each unmanaged switch just expands the number of ports for your three VLANs.  I.e. if it works with a PC plugged directly into the Cisco port, it should work if plugged into an unmanaged switch plugged into the same port.

I heard that the unmanageble switch can only handle Vlan 1 traffic, It will discard all other Vlan traffic. Is it true?

Not exactly.

An unmanaged switch cannot process tagged frames.

On trunk ports, often VLAN 1 is untagged, but that can be changed with the native VLAN command.

As long as your VLAN ports are configured as access ports, not trunk ports, it should be fine.
