Hi all, I saw CCNA books are using serial connection between routers but is it the same in real life? By the way, how do I connect 2 routers using serial cables?

You can simple connect it. It will default to L2 encapsulation type HDLC.

Not sure why you would want to connect 2 routers via a serial cable with equipment today.  You can just as easily connect an ethernet cable between the 2 router and have the IP address on the same subnet for a "crossover" connection.  Why do you want to connect via serial unless this is a lab?

I'm not sure because CCNA books are using serial connections. But now router has the ability to auto-adaption even connect with straight-thru cable?

Yeah they auto-sense what the connection actually is on the newer gear.  For your CCNA you will still need to answer that a crossover cable is needed between like devices, but in actuality you can use a straight-thur cable and you should be fine on most Cisco gear.

Like real life?  Generally no.

How do you connect two with serial cables?  Real life or in a lab?  For a lab, you plug cable into each router's serial port and configure once router as DTE and one router as DCE.  For details, see: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wan/high-level-data-link-control-hdlc/7927-hdlc-back.html?referring_site=smartnavRD

Real life, you connect to (DCE) Telco equipment.
