I have a 4331 with a 1 gig MM SFP in gig 0/0/2 connected to a 3850 c3850-nm-2-10G 1 gig MM SFP module.
no config, on either end but the default. I get a link light on the 3850 but not on the 4331.

Can you try connecting to the other SFP port and make sure the media type is sfp under the interface?

Once I ran the command "service unsupported-transceiver" gig 0/0/2 started working even tho this is a cisco SFP that worked in gig 0/0/0.
