default route question

Hi. I was wondering if anyone can explain to me the difference between a default route explicitly configured as: ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 s0, and a default router which in turn is configured as: default-router 192.168.1.1?

I know that the default route function, however i can't seem to comprehend the purpose of the default-router command when I already have a default route. Can the default-router command point to a router not physically connected to the router where the command is to be configured?

The default-router 192.168.1.1 is part of a DHCP client configuration tell the client that it's default-gateway is 192.168.1.1. So it used in setting up DHCP scopes for clients.

The "ip route 0.0.0.0 .0.0.0.0 s0" command is used by the router itself when deciding how to forward packets.

You will also be able to redistribute the 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 s0 into some dynamic routing protocols. Other dynamic routing protocols are able to make use of the default-router, RIP maybe, but I would have to look it up for sure.
