Switches can be powered by one or two sources. Whenever both power sources are active and the higher voltage power source is on, both draw power from each other. During a power outage, the switch remains powered as long as another power source is available. There should be an independent power supply for each power supply in redundant power systems. Failing to do this may result in a total power outage if there is an electrical fault in the wiring or a circuit breaker trips.
