Hello All,

I have 2 4506E with WS-X45-SUP7-E and VSS configured and multiple servers only connected to 1 chassis. My question is what if one of the two supervisors fails/down, will the Line card in it also go down? and what about the other chasis(standby) is it still running and can we move the link in the down chassis to the Ok chassis?

show switch virtual

Executing the command on VSS member switch role = VSS Active, id = 1

Switch mode : Virtual Switch
Virtual switch domain number : 100
Local switch number : 1
Local switch operational role: Virtual Switch Active
Peer switch number : 2
Peer switch operational role : Virtual Switch Standby

Executing the command on VSS member switch role = VSS Standby, id = 2

In VSS no config will be lost, when the switch-over happens, the config all the information will be moved to standby (now become active supervisor)

suggest reading how VSS works :

If one of the two supervisor (one supervisor per chassis) fails, that entire chassis goes down.

if per chasis not have dual supervisor - that will go done, Only 1 chasis working (since other failed.)

If single home device connected to failed chasis will lost connection.

You have couple of Oprion :

1. yes if the config and port available you can move single home to active VSS chasis to fix the issue.

2. but large environment this will be difficult, so suggest to go Duial supervisor in each chasis

3. if end device support Port bundling, the connect each connection to each chasis so no service will be intrupted.

Note : depends on Service level and how critical services, if you looking 24/7 always suggest to have Dual supervisor perchasis for high availablility.

Thank you for the explanation

will all configurations be lost like VLANs and need to changed to standalone in active chasis ?

Thank you
