DHCP Lease Time

Hello all,

Just a quick one about DHCP.

When the lease time (whether configured statically or the default 24 hours) expires on a cisco IOS DHCP server, is it the server that releases the expired IP address or the client?

If it is the server that release the binding, what happens since the client will still have the IP in its TCP/IP settings - will the client still be able to communicate with the network with an expired/released IP address?

Thankl you all for your thoughts on this.

Regards,

Kenny

Hi alabedekenny,

The lease information is sent across to the client by the server itself, which is one day by default and can be configured as per requirement.

And the answer for your first question is - Yes, the server releases the ip address if the same is not renewed by the client or the lease is expired.

The second answer for you is - the client will renew its lease but it not successful, it will have to stop using the ip address untill it renews its ip address.

Feel free to revert for clarifications.
