disconnecting nexus fex's

Hello All,

We have a single 2248 connected in dual homed fashion to two nexus 5000 series switches, in vpc.

the aim is to disconnect the 2248 from the 5000 switches.

Appreciate if i can get to know how this can be done (should the port channel be shutdown first or the individual ports),& the respective commands to do this please. how should the vpc association with port-channel be disconnected?

Will there be any impact on other connections in 5000 when these are disconnected?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

As soon as you shut down po21, the FEX will go offline. After that you can disassociate the physical ports from the po21 (no channel-group 21), fex (no fex associate 21) and than delete po21 all together.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it during production, disconnect the FEX during a maintenance window.

Hi,

As long as you delete only the VPC for the specific 2248, there will not be any impact on other devices connected to the 5000 switches.  Simply delete the specific VPC and the Portchannel and disconnect the 2248 physically from the 5000.

Thanks for the reply.

So, will the following sequence be correct;-

- under the port channel, delete the vpc or shutdown the port-channel

- disconnect the 2248's

Yes, that should work fine.

Thanks again for the reply.

Following are the commands in the switch now associated with the Nexus 2000 connections.

int port-channel 21
  vpc21

int port-channel 21
  switchport mode fex-fabric
  fex associate 21
  spanning-tree port type network
  vpc 21

int eth1/11
  switchport mode fex-fabric
  fex associate 21
  spanning-tree port type network
  channel-group 21

int eth1/12
   switchport mode fex-fabric
  fex associate 21
  spanning-tree port type network
  channel-group 21

To remove/disconnect the nexus 2000 from nexus 5000, will following step sequence be good:-

a. shutdown po21
b. int po21
    no vpc 21
c. no int po21

I am just wondering should the po21 be shutdown first followed by removing the vpc or should it be other way around - remove the vpc under po21 and then shutdown the po21?

Please do suggest as i am new to nexus, hence making sure things are in order.

As a follow up to this, we shutdown to ports that were associated as uplinks to an old fex we removed 2 years ago, we did this today and upon shutting down those two ports  the switch invoked a switchport shutdown command and shutdown every single port on the 5500 is there any reason why this would of occured.
