DNS-based routing on static routes

Netmart

Level 1

Hello,

I was wondering, if it is considered at any time soon or at some point in future to introduce DNS-based routing on Cisco Routers/ASAs?

Instead of using a destination's IP Address, is it possible to use its DNS entry on a static route? [Similar to FQDN ACLs on ASA]

Please advise.

Thanks.

none of the dynamic routing protocols are designed to work on this level, they route based on a layer 3 address not a DNS name.  so I this is not a feature that will be available anytime soon. sorry

Thank you Dennis for the prompt response.

The question remains how to police applications, which use DNS as destination addresses instead of static IPs.

So, are you trying to rate limit bandwith usage per applications outbound (from LAN to the Internet)?
