DNS - use the client device's name as hostname

Hi,

I'm new to the world of cisco iOS, having previously used web managed routers, such as on the cisco rv320 router.  Right now, I'm going in steps to configure a Cisco 2951 router for training/testing.

when using the rv320, it was a simple process to display the DHCP tables which included IP address, MAC address and the hostname generated from the client devices.

I've configured my 2951 router to provide DHCP services on a sing /24 subnet.  A range of addresses in the subnet have been excluded in order to assign static IP addresses to some client devices.  In this network, it's not necessary nor practical to have the 2951 hand out hostnames along with a dhcp generated IP address.

As was provided automatically from the RV320 router, I'd like to configure DHCP/DNS on the 2951 so that the hostname of a device is automatically assigned using the device name / computer name.

From there, I'd want to display /export the tables with client IP address / MAC address / client hostname.

I've looked around in the guides and training materials, but so far stumped on finding out how to do this in cisco ios.  When searching for this in the cisco DNS & DHCP documentation, the topic that appeared most frequently was how to assign a hostname to a specific IP address in DHCP.

Any info on how to find the correct configuration information to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi

It would be better for you to use a PC based DHCP/DNS server. The router cannot offer full fledged DHCP/DNS services.

Thanks

John
