When would I router running eigrp for example need to make a query, I thought if id didnt know about a route it would drop the packet unless a default is used ?

If a route goes down, and eigrp has no other feasible successor, it will become active querying it's neigbors for a route.

If there was not a previous route that it would have been trying to find a successor for, I believe that the packet will be dropped, and the eigrp process would not query neighbors.
