when trying to initiate the extended vlan range with the command spanning-tree extend system-id, the command is accepted and shows up as being enabled in show spanning-tree summary but when I try and enable Vlan 1006 I get the following error:
(config)#vlan 1006
Command rejected: Bad VLAN list - character #5 (EOL) delimits a VLAN
number (1006) out of the range 1 to 1005.
the software version that is being used is: 12.1(8b)EX5
when looking at the command prerequisites it says that this command should be supported on this software release.
When looking for the software release on CCO it looks like it has been totally withdrawn (not even in the DF list). the release before it is DF and the version we are using is the work around for it - very strange.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

According to the following doc extended vlans weren't supported in IOS until 12.1(11b) at earliest ie.
VTP and Extended VLANs
The Extended System ID feature is used to enable extended-range VLAN identification. When Extended System ID is enabled, it disables the pool of MAC addresses used for the VLAN spanning tree, and leaves a single MAC address that identifies the switch. The Catalyst IOS Software Release 12.1(11b)EX and 12.1(13)E introduce Extended System ID support for Catalyst 6000/6500 to support 4096 VLANs in compliance with the IEEE 802.1Q standard. These VLANs are organized into several ranges, each of which can be used differently. Some of these VLANs are propagated to other switches in the network when you use the VTP. The extended-range VLANs are not propagated, so you must configure extended-range VLANs manually on each network device.
