I am attaching here one of my cisco 3550 "sh ver" and "sh vtp status" kindly let me know does this switch support extended vlan (upto 4094)

Hi

You can't configure extended vlans from vlan database config mode.

From config mode

JPR-MPL-COR-SWH-78(config)# vlan 3000

The VLAN database configuration mode (that you access by entering the vlan database privileged EXEC command) does not support the extended range.

Yes it will as long as you are in VTP transparent mode which you are from your vtp status output.

Supported VLANs

The Catalyst 3550 switch supports 1005 VLANs in VTP client, server, and transparent modes. VLANs are identified with a number from 1 to 4094. VLAN IDs 1002 through 1005 are reserved for Token Ring and FDDI VLANs. VTP only learns normal-range VLANs, with VLAN IDs 1 to 1005; VLAN IDs greater than 1005 are extended-range VLANs and are not stored in the VLAN database. The switch must be in VTP transparent mode when you create VLAN IDs from 1006 to 4094.

So "VTP only learns normal-range VLANs". That is why you see the figure 1005 in sh vtp status but the switch will support extended vlans.

Hello Jon,

I understood that we can only do the extended VLAN configuration in transparent mode,if we are using vtp version 2.

But is there any specific reason that we cant configure it in Server mode?

Hello at all,

I've the same question for an Catalyst 9606R.

He is in vtp v1 server mode with already configured extended vlans.

I mean he were configured for extended vlan as he were in client mode - setting him later to server mode.

Is it not longer possible to configure extended vlans when device works in vtp v1 server mode?

Older C6880 did it in server mode...

Can anyone please help?

I recall (???) you cannot configure VLANs in client mode, and to do so in server mode would require VTPv3.

In VTP transparent or VTP off modes, extended VLANs should be locally configurable.

So, regarding a 6880 that allowed extended VLANs in server mode, you're sure it wasn't using VTPv3?

exactly. I can't configure it in client either in server mode.

On older C6880 and C4500X it was possible to configure extended vlans even which mode is running.

Curius is the following:

My C9606R pair has configured extended vlans, it worked in the past.

I tried to switch to 'mode client':

C9606R(config)#vtp mode client
Device mode cannot be VTP Client for VLANS because extended VLAN(s) exist

And here is the error message if i try to create a new extended vlan:
