Guidance on networking home router to 3550 switch

I've connected a netgear 3400 wireless router to a cisco 3550 switch.  The router is coming off the DSL modem.  So far all connected devices including the router are in vlan 1, (printer, pc's etc.).  I have configured the switch with a management ip address it actually configured itself when I plugged in the router and too on the gateway address.  All has been working but I wondered if I should put the router on it's own vlan (vlan 4 or whatever).  Is this the proper way to configure a home network using this equipment?

The issue you're going to run into is that if the gateway is on VLAN 4 and your devices are on VLAN 1, you'll need to route between those two VLANs (either via a route on the switch or another routing device/interface).  I would suggest you maintain everything on VLAN 1 and maybe bring up a test network on VLAN 4 to get comfortable with layout.
