Help Upgrading ISO on C2960G switch.

Hello,

I am in the process of upgrading some switches IOS's from a base image w/o crypto to a base image with crypto. On the first switch in question i have 24169984 bytes free, the image i want to upgrade to is 32MB. Therefore i need to make room. As the 'bytes total' of the flash memory is only 325144048 (32.5MB) i have to remove the existing ISO from the switch.

My question is, if i delete the existing ISO from the switch will it actually remove the ISO? I don't want to be stuck in a situation with no ISO on the switch and lose all of the config. My plan is to backup the config, remove the existing ISO (will keep a copy of this too) and then upload the new ISO and boot from that. Is that the way to do it? This is my first time doing this so just wanted some assurances and recommendations from people who had experience.

Hello Jay,

I would first start by saying since you are worried about the current configuration on the switch and not wanting to lose it, I would recommend using TFTP and getting a copy of the configuration off of the switch on to your laptop for safe keeping.

Secondly, have you issued the "dir" command in order to see if there may be more than one image that could be deleted?

You should see something similar the following.

switch#dir

57931776 bytes total (42636288 bytes free)

This output shows only 1 image.  If your output shows multiple images, then that is one way you can clean up space.

I have backed up my running-config so that's a good start.

This is what i see when i list the flash directory:

I have realised a mistake. I thought the image was 32MB but its actually 5.46MB. The cisco website says "Minimum Memory: DRAM64MB Flash 32MB". Does this mean i still need this amount free even if i only want to upload a 5.46MB image onto it? I have 24.1MB space so surely i can just put the new one on and it will be fine?

When i boot from the new image will it wipe the config? Just wondering whether i will have to input the backup or whether it will retain it.
